Gola della Rossa Park and Frasassi Caves
The average travel time by car from Hotel Imperial in Marotta to Gola Rossa Park is approximately 1 hour.
The recommended itinerary includes a visit to the Frasassi Caves, Gola Rossa Park and possible excursions and walks along special paths.
The Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Natural Park, 10,026 hectares in size, is the largest protected area in the region and includes the underground Frasassi Caves and the Municipalities of Arcevia, Cerreto d'Esi, Fabriano, Genga and Serra S. Quirico. The area represents a spectacular example of karstic structures, shaped by the erosive waters of the Sentino river, creating rocky steep slopes and giving birth to an underground kingdom of unparalleled splendour: the Frasassi caves.
The park undoubtedly represents an open air observatory of biodiversity, including 105 of the 124 nesting bird species present in the Province of Ancona, 39 mammal species, 29 reptile and amphibian species and over 1000 flora species.
The following main species can be found: Golden Eagle, Lanner Falcon with 3 pairs of rare and threatened species in Italy, Peregrine Falcon, Rock Thrush and Blue Rock Thrush, Grey Heron and Night Heron, Kingfisher and Dipper, Short-toed Eagle, Red Kite, Eagle Owl and Goshawk.
Furthermore, there are always at least two families of wolves, each composed of two adults (male and alpha female) and their young, which roam the surrounding territory, even outside the park, feeding on 80% wild boar.
The presence of wildcats and polecats has also been confirmed, as well as common foxes, weasels, beech martens and badgers. Amongst the rodents, in addition to the more common squirrels and porcupines, the park also includes rare and elusive species such as the Garden Dormouse. Insectivorous mammals include the Hedgehog, the park’s symbolic animal, the Blind Mole and the Shrew Mouse.
There are also many legends tied to the park, such as that of the Cave of Infinity, which tells the story of a young couple in love and their unfortunate romance. In the Cave of Infinity, each night the young woman transformed into a goat by a sorcerer, emerges from the cave’s crevices, shattering the air with her scream. For this reason, the cave is also known as the "Cave of the Goat".
The Gola della Rossa and Frasassi Regional Park offers many opportunities for sport and long walks, night tours, cycle-tourism, excursions by foot, excursions with snow shoes and trekking skis.
The night tour, also possible with snow shoes and trekking skis, is an easy walk through the bush and meadows, where it is possible to admire the stars and listen to the sounds of nature.
